Miss Margaridas's Way

A tragicomic monologue by an impetuous woman

Teatro Santa Ana, Biblioteca, San Miguel de Allende

July 28 - August 1

7:30pm - Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat                      5pm - Sun

For the fifth year, Camino Real Productions, under the directorship of Linda McAlister (a JA student sponsor), is bringing a summer production to San Miguel, and this year we will be the beneficiaries. The play is "Miss Margarida's Way", a very funny and sometimes crude and shocking one woman tour-de-force about an out-of-control school teacher and her hapless eighth-grade biology students.

It was written in 1972 by a twenty-one year old Brazilian playwright, Roberto Athayde, as more than a comic diversion, since the depiction of the tyrannical Miss Margarida was his commentary on the dictatorship ruling his country. The Brazilian government recognized this and banned all performances. However the play went on to achieve over 300 productions in 30 countries.

The play was produced in New York in 1978 and Estelle Parsons was nominated for a Tony for her performance. In preparing for this production, Linda interviewed Miss Parsons personally, talked with the author on the telephone, and viewed videographed performances of different performances of the play.

Author Athayde's impetus as a playwright was to break the wall between active performance and passive viewing. In this play the audience members are the students, and they are not only encouraged but expected to respond to their teacher in any and all ways they feel appropriate-if they dare.

Performances are at 7:30pm Wed., 7/28 through Sat., 7/31, and at 5pm on Sun., 8/1. Tickets are $150p except for the Wed. night Opening Night performance when they are $200p. Wednesday tickets include an invitation to a Gala Reception where you can meet Linda, actors Debi Kierst and Timothy Harland, and the production crew.

Come to class & see if you like your new teacher! If you need reinforcements, there will be "Margaridas" for sale in the café during recess.
